MERG Study

Multifocal Electroretinogram shows positive effects of zinc and lutein supplements on eye health in AMD patients.

Doctors at the University of Alabama Department of Ophthalmology / Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital have discovered that a specific supplement may improve the health of the eye in patients with age related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in the United States.

An Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Retina Service, conducted a pilot study using high doses of zinc and lutein (found in the Macular Health eye vitamin) in patients with AMD. The patients, after only taking the supplement 12 weeks had an average 16% improvement in macular function. This is the first study documenting improvement in eye health in patients with AMD using new testing technology. The Multifocal Electroretinogram (MERG) was used to gauge the overall health of the macula before and after using the Macular Health eye vitamin.

UPDATE (April 2009):

A group of retina specialists at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) recently released the second phase of the Multifocal Electroretinogram (MERG) pilot study of patients placed on supplemental vitamins, minerals and carotenoids - a combination also known as Macular Health. Phase II of the pilot study represents the first-ever documentation of possible long-term improvement in eye health in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients, individuals at-risk for total blindness due to deterioration of the macula.
